Besides offices closing and more traffic on the roads, some unusual things can be seen and experienced on Monday morning's event. Deciduous trees will have their leaves act as pinhole cameras when the moon is only covering part of the sun. There will crescent shadows all over the ground.
Before and after totality, shadow bands will race back and forth caused by sunlight peeking around the mountains and valleys of the moon. This can best be seen on a white surface.
During totality, the air temperature will drop 20 degrees. Bats may fly around. Crickets may begin to chirp.
The umbra, or moon's shadow, will race across the ground just before and after totality.
The stars will pop out during totality. In fact, 4 planets can been seen; Mars, Jupiter, Mercury and Venus. Don't confuse Sirius the Dog Star with the planets, its the 2nd brightest star after to the sun.
During totality, the corona, which is the bluish white outer atmosphere of the sun, allows us to see the Sun's powerful magnetic field pulled into graceful curving lines.
